Traveling as a family is a unique opportunity to create new memories and think back in the future to the good times spent with your children during a family holiday spent in Sardinia. Of course, and those who are used to traveling as a family know this well, organizing a new trip with children, whether small or big, requires a lot of organization and patience. One has to think early on about where to go and where not to go. Some sacrifices must be made, and knowing that it will not be possible to visit and do everything that was planned. Perhaps the children would prefer to stay all day at the beach while mom and dad would like to visit a particular archaeological area to learn more about the history of the place, or stroll along the markets scattered along the streets of some small inland village.
Unexpected events and last-minute schedule changes are the order of the day, but that’s the beauty of it too. In the end a compromise will always be found, and everyone will return home carrying with them a very special memory of the time spent together. Perhaps of that very trip that someone did not want to take until the last minute before departure!
Here we will try to give some travel pointers to those who are starting from scratch with planning, to those who are already planning their trip to Sardinia together with their family, and to those who have already planned it and are just missing the final touches.
Here at Janas Country Resort we host families very often. We like to think we become part of the vacation in some way. We have couples who have made their first memories here, and now come back to make new ones with those children we have seen first born, and then grow, year after year.
Family travelers want to be close to their children, so we know how important it is for rooms to be close together. We always prioritize this important detail.
There are several accommodations from which families can choose:
There are some activities that are perhaps more suitable than others for a family holiday in Sardinia. Among these, we think a nice excursion of the day could be a visit to the Grotte di Nettuno. This is one of the largest and most beautiful sea caves in Italy, a spectacle of nature within the Porto Conte park, in the protected marina of Capo Caccia. You can access it via the famous Cabriol staircase, for an experience of crazy views overlooking the sea and trekking. Alternatively, you can also reach the cave by boat: here you will find the necessary information to access it. This is also the best way to spend the day before a visit to the town of Alghero, especially if the weather is not conducive to being on the beach. But beware, on particularly windy days the caves will not be accessible.
Also near Alghero, for the more courageous, we recommend a climbing experience in the ‘Parco delle Ragnatele’. This park offers both adults and children the opportunity to experience the thrill of climbing among the trees, thanks to acrobatic routes created by aerial passages between branches and placed at various heights. The routes vary in difficulty. Children’s routes require the accompaniment of an adult.
If you talk about the sea, you talk about snorkelling. On the seabed of the Tavolara marina you will find vast expanses of posidonia oceanica, inhabited by damselfish, damselfish, bream and salps. Here you will find exceptional biodiversity.
Lastly, we suggest you take part in the festivals of the individual villages that may be right on the days of your holiday. There is no better way to celebrate than with the inhabitants of the island. This could be a unique opportunity to get to know the local culture in a festive atmosphere. You will be able to see the costumes of Sardinia, watch the parade of masks, and try the typical dishes of the different localities. The festivals are the most diverse: each village has its own and at specific times. The cavalcata sarda in May and the faradda di li candareri in August in Sassari. The medieval commemoration or ‘la bastida di Sorres’ in Borutta in November. The Folk festival in Bolotana in July. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Sardinian festivities during your stay. Keep up to date, or ask us directly where you could go, we will try to give you some advice according to the days of your stay.
