Sardinia family holidays

Those planning a family vacation have several things to think about, and here we will try to point out some of them

Traveling as a family is a unique opportunity to create new memories and think back in the future to the good times spent with your children during a family holiday spent in Sardinia. Of course, and those who are used to traveling as a family know this well, organizing a new trip with children, whether small or big, requires a lot of organization and patience. One has to think early on about where to go and where not to go. Some sacrifices must be made, and knowing that it will not be possible to visit and do everything that was planned. Perhaps the children would prefer to stay all day at the beach while mom and dad would like to visit a particular archaeological area to learn more about the history of the place, or stroll along the markets scattered along the streets of some small inland village.

Unexpected events and last-minute schedule changes are the order of the day, but that’s the beauty of it too. In the end a compromise will always be found, and everyone will return home carrying with them a very special memory of the time spent together. Perhaps of that very trip that someone did not want to take until the last minute before departure!

Here we will try to give some travel pointers to those who are starting from scratch with planning, to those who are already planning their trip to Sardinia together with their family, and to those who have already planned it and are just missing the final touches.

Room choice

Here at Janas Country Resort we host families very often. We like to think we become part of the vacation in some way. We have couples who have made their first memories here, and now come back to make new ones with those children we have seen first born, and then grow, year after year.

Family travelers want to be close to their children, so we know how important it is for rooms to be close together. We always prioritize this important detail.

There are several accommodations from which families can choose:

  • Classic rooms. When traveling as a family, guests can request that the room next to theirs have separate beds. An ideal solution for those who are unwilling to give even an inch to their brother or sister. Parents will always have a special key that can open both their own and their children’s rooms, in case they need to keep an eye on younger children. The veranda between the rooms will also be shared, so that the movement of parents and children is free. Here you will also find a place furnished with shaded tables and chairs where you can all gather together to eat or play a game of cards in the evening, under the veranda.

  • The Comfort Room or the Superior Room. These two rooms also offer the possibility of accommodating a classically sized single bed (90x200cm) in addition to the double bed, and are the best choice for those who want to share a room with their child. The Comfort Room is located on the ground floor, and offers direct access to the garden. Next to this is a Classic Room, a perfect match for larger families. The Superior Room, on the other hand, is located on the second floor of the hotel, and is accessed by an elevator that leads directly to the room. Here you will have a beautiful Italian-made king-size bed and a private balcony overlooking the garden. The elevator will also take you directly to the dedicated gym area.

Spend some time in our little resort

The Janas Country Resort is a perfect hotel for families seeking relaxation away from traffic. Nestled in the hills of North Sardinia, surrounded by a large green space, here you will find everything you need for a fantastic holiday with your children. Time in the hotel passes quickly, but it flows slowly lulled by the pure air of the countryside: it is the time for a slow holiday that you wish would never end. Here you can spend the hottest hours lounging or reading a book in the shade under the parasols, while the kids swim in our beautiful pool. The height of the water is no problem for children. From the inexperienced to the more experienced swimmers, our pool offers an ideal place to spend a day swimming peacefully. You will also find a raised area within the pool that will be perfect for sunbathing while lying down in the water. This area is also suitable for small children, who will not be afraid of high water here. Someone in the family might also enjoy a few hours in our gym. A small, comfortable area surrounded by living stone and with Technogym equipment, so you can keep your body in shape even when holidays try to prevent it. Whether it’s an early morning jog, a little exercise bike before dinner or some healthy workout to keep your chest and arms in shape, you’ll find what you need here. “What if we want to play in the garden?” Who’s stopping you!? We have set up a nice badminton net in the garden and the necessary equipment to play with each other or compete against other hotel guests. Those who wish can also practise Croquet. You can set up your bows on the lawn to organise your own course and start an individual or team game. You will also find some board games at your disposal, which you can organise perhaps the evening before or after dinner, or perhaps on a slightly less sunny day when you would like to do nothing more than rest after the wonderful hike the previous day.

Family friendly beaches

Choosing between the thousands of beaches in island is quite a difficult task. Here you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Italy, but perhaps some beaches are more suitable than others for a holiday with kids in Sardinia. Certainly in the North West, the most famous beach is La Pelosa in Stintino. In summer, however, this beach tends to be too crowded for many people’s tastes. In addition, there are several rules to be observed: first, you have to book the entrance as the beach has a limited number of visitors. You can do this here. And you must bring a mat with you, as the use of normal towels is prohibited. This is why we recommend spending the day in Stintino at the Ezzi mannu beach, or at La Pelosetta. Here you will find crystal-clear water and ample space for your children to play with each other all day long. Perhaps try to visit La Pelosa before leaving Stintino, when other tourists begin to leave the beach. The view is simply stunning. In the Alghero area, the beach of Pineta Mugoni may be the best choice for those who like both the sea and a shady spot. Here you will find a large pine forest along the beach where you can picnic and take refuge during the hottest hours of the day. Also keep in mind Le Bombarde, they are an excellent alternative. On the opposite coast, along north-eastern Sardinia, a beach worth visiting is definitely Capo Coda Cavallo. It is perhaps the least famous beach in the San Teodoro area, where you can find wonderful beaches such as Cala Brandinchi, Lu Impostu and La Cinta. But Capo Coda Cavallo is a very special beach, with sandy bottom and ankle-deep crystal-clear water for metres and metres of walking. Further north you will find the marina of Golfo Aranci, and past Olbia, in the territory of the Costa Smeralda, you will find the Spiagge del Principe and Cala Capriccioli, which we have also talked about here: Some of the best beaches in North Sardinia

Great family activities

There are some activities that are perhaps more suitable than others for a family holiday in Sardinia. Among these, we think a nice excursion of the day could be a visit to the Grotte di Nettuno. This is one of the largest and most beautiful sea caves in Italy, a spectacle of nature within the Porto Conte park, in the protected marina of Capo Caccia. You can access it via the famous Cabriol staircase, for an experience of crazy views overlooking the sea and trekking. Alternatively, you can also reach the cave by boat: here you will find the necessary information to access it. This is also the best way to spend the day before a visit to the town of Alghero, especially if the weather is not conducive to being on the beach. But beware, on particularly windy days the caves will not be accessible.

Also near Alghero, for the more courageous, we recommend a climbing experience in the ‘Parco delle Ragnatele’. This park offers both adults and children the opportunity to experience the thrill of climbing among the trees, thanks to acrobatic routes created by aerial passages between branches and placed at various heights. The routes vary in difficulty. Children’s routes require the accompaniment of an adult.

If you talk about the sea, you talk about snorkelling. On the seabed of the Tavolara marina you will find vast expanses of posidonia oceanica, inhabited by damselfish, damselfish, bream and salps. Here you will find exceptional biodiversity.

Lastly, we suggest you take part in the festivals of the individual villages that may be right on the days of your holiday. There is no better way to celebrate than with the inhabitants of the island. This could be a unique opportunity to get to know the local culture in a festive atmosphere. You will be able to see the costumes of Sardinia, watch the parade of masks, and try the typical dishes of the different localities. The festivals are the most diverse: each village has its own and at specific times. The cavalcata sarda in May and the faradda di li candareri in August in Sassari. The medieval commemoration or ‘la bastida di Sorres’ in Borutta in November. The Folk festival in Bolotana in July. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience Sardinian festivities during your stay. Keep up to date, or ask us directly where you could go, we will try to give you some advice according to the days of your stay.
