What is the weather like in Sardinia in September? What to do in Sardinia in October? Can I go swimming? Autumn has arrived, but who said that summer and holidays in Sardinia end in August? You can still go to the beach in September and October in Sardinia!
Autumn in Sardinia is like a second summer. Sure, the days may be starting to get short, but the weather is still good and mostly sunny: very often the temperatures are stable around 25°C.
In our opinion, there are some very good reasons to continue visiting the island at this time, but let’s go in order:
Summer in Sardinia is for many far too hot to fully enjoy what the island has to offer. You spend all your time by the pool or on the beach, in the water or in the shade, and the evenings are too short to visit the island’s villages. But in the autumn, it is a different story: there is finally a light breeze, and it is the best opportunity to venture out into the countryside to discover the island’s most important archaeological finds, such as the Santu Antine nuraghe, the Romanesque Road of Sardinia, the Sa Coveccada dolmen, and the tombs of the giants. You can go for a walk in the villages of Alghero or Bosa or Castelsardo, eat in small open-air restaurants. While already in September some villages suffer from the arrival of cold weather, in Sardinia you can still be outdoors, as if you were just entering spring.
Of course, the sea is always there, always crystal clear. The water still retains the heat of the whole summer, and for those who have not had a chance to travel during this period, they now have a chance to make up for it. If you still don’t know which beaches to visit, see our article on the most beautiful beaches in North Sardinia, here you will find some of the beaches we recommend.
In September and October in Sardinia, you won’t need to queue at all, and as there are fewer travellers at this time, you can finally relax on the beach and get some sun too.
But one of the most interesting aspects of this period is definitely the gastronomy. Change the season, change the ingredients. When it comes to autumn, first mushrooms come to mind, then the first pumpkins of the year, courgettes, fennel, and there is no better time to try new dishes than when nature serves us its first fresh fruits.
No more 40°C. In September, the perfect temperature finally arrives in Sardinia. This is the time to travel by bike along the coast, then into the hills of the interior, and then to the opposite coast. At this time, we especially recommend a visit to the island of Asinara, either by bike or Jeep (we do not recommend a boat trip, click here for more information), an unspoilt nature reserve full of charm.
September and October are also the ideal months to get together with friends for a motorcycling holiday among the island’s famous curves: there are no curves that are not famous in Sardinia. This is, after all, the second home of every motorcyclist: of those who love to descend from the Limbara pass to reach the Burgos forest; of those who ride up the coast to Alghero to venture into the Argentiera; of those who only have eyes for the 125, and could ride it all their lives.
For those who get up early, we recommend trekking in the mountains, perhaps visiting the Gorropu gorge, or planning an excursion to the caves, a canoe trip or a boat trip.
Of course, the adventures do not end there. What is important is to realise that summer and the sea are not the one and only reasons to travel. Sardinia offers all kinds of activities at all times of the year. Every traveller will be able to find what they are looking for in our land, an island that allows you to travel all the time, and to travel for a long time.
With the arrival of autumn, central Sardinia is preparing to host one of the island’s best-known festivals. It is the ‘Cortes Apertas’, or Autumn in Barbagia. Every weekend, starting in September, the small villages in Barbagia take it in turns to show off their peculiar traditions, display their typical costumes and serve the culinary specialities of their villages. Here, one can taste Sardinian wine in its various declinations, watch pasta being prepared, and sample sweets that you would be unlikely to find in a normal pastry shop. Every week there is a different event, from the parade of masks to the typical tenor songs, each one closely linked to its own town.
There is perhaps no better opportunity to get to know Sardinia, celebrating together with the Sardinians, drinking a glass of wine with them while celebrating their town.
